The Secrets To Choosing The Right Colors For Your Attire

Part of looking professional is showing that you know how to dress yourself. Part of the challenge of dressing yourself well is knowing how to match clothing colors in a way that will make you look your very best. There are several tricks that can be used to make you look both more professional and more attractive.

Use The Color Wheel

The color wheel is a useful tool in any situation where you need to match colors, including when you are matching the colors of your wardrobe. The theory is that it is easier to match colors that are closer together. The purpose is to combine colors that are nice to look at rather than mashing together colors that will create a sense of chaos.

Consider Your Appearance

Another consideration is whether you are a high contrast or low contrast individual. Those who are high contrast individuals are those who have a hair color that contrasts their skin color. If you have a lot of color contrast, it is important that you also have a lot of contrast in your clothing colors. This will help compliment the contrast between your hair and skin color.

If you are a low contrast individual, this means that your hair and skin blend together. This could include if you are bald and therefore do not have a lot of contrast. If you have low contrast, you will want to seek a monochromatic look by choosing articles of clothing that have a similar color.

Search for clothes that are different from your skin color. Otherwise, you will look washed out. For example, if you have dark skin, it makes sense to wear clothing that is lighter.

Use Neutrals

If you are having a difficult time finding colors that match, start using more neutral colors in your wardrobe. These are colors that work well with other types of colors. These include:

  • Black
  • White
  • Grey
  • Brown

To keep things simple, wear a single color and then have the rest of the articles of clothing be neutral. The color is enough to make your clothing interesting, but without the risk of clashing with something else.

If you are going to have clothing custom-made, it is recommended that you request apparel swatch cards. These will provide you with a better sense of how different colors and materials will look together so that you can choose the combination that will look the best.
